Joining Junior Roller Derby

New skaters starting TBA

Message our FACEBOOK PAGE in advance with your name, age and shoe size and we can try to see if we can bring some skates for you to try out that day if you do not have any.

New skaters will need to bring their own helmet & mouthguard for their two free trial dates. (Inline skates can work in a pinch for first day only). Skaters are expected to get their own roller derby gear for October practices onward.

All skaters must:

  • Be between the ages of 10-17.
  • Have & wear full gear at ALL practices including: Quad skates, knee & elbow pads, wrist guards, helmet and mouth guard.  Inline skates will be permitted for the first practice, while trying out the program however quad skates will be required.
  • Complete and hand in the Registration form.
  • Read, agree and sign the Code of Conduct & the Dress Code.
  • Maintain a 50% or better attendance. Talk with Coaches for exceptions. Warn coaches in advance if you will be late or miss a practice.
  • Bear the expense of personal equipment, practice fees, uniforms, & membership dues.
  • Have valid WFTDA Insurance

Practice Schedule

Practice takes place at the Cumberland Recreation Institute located at 2665 Dunsmuir Ave, Cumberland

Practices are Wednesdays
(Time & Start Date to be announced soon!)

Team notices are posted on the private Stone Cold Stellas Facebook group for practice changes, holiday schedules, or cancellations. It is up to the skater and their parent/guardians to check notices regarding events and practice.

Season

The Roller Derby season is September to June. Skaters will learn fundamental skating skills, roller derby basic strategies, and WTFDA rule set as it applies. Skaters will advance their skills at their own speed. Skill and experience is gained through practice and time, skaters are encouraged/expected to practice skills at home and may have the opportunity to attend bootcamps or other team practices during the season.

Costs/Fees:

Team Membership Dues

Non-members wanting to join the League may try out skating at a practice before they are required to register, pay dues and have Flat Track Roller Derby Insurance.

Fees Due: $TBA (Season TBA)

Parents who are unable to pay dues because of financial hardship should communicate this issue to the Head Coach.

All monies collected by the Stone Cold Stellas Junior Roller Derby League, fundraised, donated, or sponsored will go back into the league.  Volunteers fill all positions within the league.  No one is paid. Financial statements will be accessible, through scheduling an appointment to view them through the league Head Coach Val.

INSURANCE FEES (REQUIRED)

Skaters may sign a waiver form to try out, and then are required to have Insurance before skating. Canadian Roller Derby Insurance is REQUIRED for all skaters along with team dues.

This can be purchased for $55 here on the WFTDA website.  Proof of Insurance and insurance numbers will need to be provided to the coaches and kept with parents/skaters at all times. They will require this insurance number for games and all external skating events.

PARENT VOLUNTEERING

Coaches are unpaid volunteers who love Roller Derby and rollerskating. Parents will be needed to volunteer at practices for track setup, mat setup, occasional reffing, jam timing, penalty box running, as well as helping at skating events and games. We simply are a small league and need the help. Fundraising may be required to offset costs to skaters and will require parent and/or skater participation.

SKATER VOLUNTEERING

The best way for a skater to learn more about the game and be the best teammate they can be is to volunteer in other games/scrimmages to learn how they are run.  You can learn alot of strategy behind the scenes! Juniors and their parents can volunteer to help run adult or junior games. All roller derby leauges/games/events on the island are run by and need volunteers.
